.*(chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|bard\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|bing\.com\/chat|claude\.ai|you\.com|phind\.com|kagi\.com|meta\.ai|deepseek\.com|mistral\.ai|grok\.com|x\.ai).*
Note: this is a floor. Many AI answers send no referrer (“dark” traffic), so real AI traffic is higher than any source-based segment can show.
Why track AI traffic at all?
People increasingly find brands through AI answers, not just Google. But GA4 lumps that traffic into “Referral” or hides it in “Direct”, so most teams have no idea it exists. A single regex turns those AI visits into a segment you can actually report on — sessions, conversions and revenue from AI, separated out.
What is “dark” AI traffic?
When an AI tool cites your page, the click often carries no referrer. GA4 then files it under Direct. So the segment this tool builds captures the AI visits that do pass a referrer — a reliable floor, not the full number. The real signal is the trend: is that floor growing month over month?
